Rheumatic diseases are defined as the inflammation affecting joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and muscles. These diseases can cause severe pain, restriction of movement of the joints, disability and deformity. The most common disease is Osteoarthritis, is a chronic inflammatory disease mainly affecting the knee, hip and joints of hands. In a study done in Kenya, 51%, 21% and 59.5% of osteoarthritis patients were found to have hypertension, diabetes and overweight or obese, respectively.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and SLE are auto-immune disorders in which the bodys immune system attacks own joints and tissues. Gout is an inflammatory condition caused due to deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints. Many factors are likely to be responsible for the increased number of reports of Gout, including urbanization, the adoption of a Western lifestyle, increased alcohol consumption and the rising incidence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and renal disease in African populations.

The market is majorly driven by the rising burden of Rheumatic disease owing to rapid urbanization in Kenya. The increased burden is due to delayed diagnosis arising from poor education, sociocultural beliefs, poverty, and limited access to care.

Over the past decade, partnerships with international academic institutions have resulted in some progress in the training of rheumatologists and health professionals and development of rheumatology services in countries such as Kenya. The UWEZO project, a collaboration between Kenyan, UK, and Swedish rheumatologists, trained a team of physicians and health workers who conducted an educational program at 11 sites across Kenya and provided basic skills to over 500 health providers.

The increasing incidence of Rheumatic diseases, increasing levels of awareness related to disease progression, and available services are leading to a high growth of Rheumatology therapeutics.

However, high cost of treatment, uncertain reimbursement policies and limited human resources available in the country are factors restraining the growth of Rheumatology Drug market.
