Neurological disorders are a group of disorders affecting the structure and function of the Central Nervous System (Brain and Spinal Cord) of the body mainly in adults. According to the research study conducted in Kenyas leading public health tertiary institutions, Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in 2018, Overall, ischaemic stroke accounted for 55.6% of the stroke cases, with women being the most affected (57.5%). The most common risk factors were hypertension, smoking, and diabetes. One in four Kenyans aged 1869years have elevated blood pressure. The prevalence of hypertension is higher among women and urban residents than among men and rural residents. Alzheimers and Parkinsons Disease account for the leading causes of mortality due to neurodegenerative diseases. Limited knowledge of prevalence of Parkinsons disease in Kenya has resulted in it being neglected and its symptoms often confused with ageing.

Market Drivers

The market is majorly driven by the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Kenya. High prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension among Kenyan population and subsequent complications like stroke is creating growth opportunities in the Neurological Drug market. In Kenya, a quarter of the population aged 1869years is estimated to be hypertensive and a half pre-hypertensive.

Surge in lifestyle-associated neurological disorders among young population is expected to fuel growth in the market. Increase in prevalence of smokers, substance abuse, depression among young population and other risk factors will propel growth in the forecasted period.

Development of new and more efficient drugs by leading pharmaceutical companies will drive growth in the neurological Drug market during the forecast period.

However, there is a serious dearth of neurologists in the country that restricts growth of the market. There are only 20 neurologists practicing in Kenya and most of them are concentrated in three major cities of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. There are no neurologists in rural Kenya.
