Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease affecting children and adults. The air passages in the lungs become narrow due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small airways. In Kenya, asthma is more common in urban settlements than in rural areas. Based on results of International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), there was an increase in the prevalence of asthma symptoms in 13-14 years aged children from 17.1% to 18% in Nairobi.

The risk and intensity of exposure to these harmful irritants amongst different vulnerable groups continues to increase due to the lack of clear regulatory policies particularly in informal occupational settings.
