Market Definition
Breakfast cereal is made from processed grains and often fortified with vitamins and minerals which is commonly eaten with milk, yogurt, fruit, or nuts. Breakfast cereals are processed grains for human consumption and are usually packaged for sale as ready-to-eat (RTE) or hot cereals (HC) and must be cooked before consumption. The cereals are manufactured by continuous cooking, molding, and drying operations, after which flavors, sweeteners, vitamin and mineral fortifications, and particulate additive options are provided prior to packaging.
Flaked: Flaked cereals are made directly from whole grain kernels or parts of kernels of corn, wheat, or rice and are processed in such a way as to obtain particles, called flaking grits that form one flake each.
Puffed: Puffed cereals are made by exploding cooked cereal from a pressure chamber, thus expanding the grain to several times its original size.
Shredded: is made from whole grains with the germ with no flavour added and comes in the form of tablets composed of shreds of cooked and toasted wheat.
Extruded: Extruded breakfast cereal products are manufactured from corn, rice which have high fibre content along with providing nutritional value, crispness, and desired texture.
