Flow cytometry is a key process for screening cells from a heterologous cell mixture used in cell sorting, counting, protein regeneration, and engineering. The analysis of cell surface and intracellular molecule expression, the characterization and definition of various cell types in a heterogeneous cell population, the evaluation of the purity of isolated subpopulations, and the measurement of cell size and volume are all common uses for flow cytometry. It enables the simultaneous examination of multiple parameters for a single cell. A flow cytometer uses lasers to produce light, which is subsequently dispersed by the sample's cells, recorded by detectors, and converted into signals for analysis and measurement.
Most frequently used for analyzing peripheral blood, bone marrow, and other bodily fluids, flow cytometry offers a tried-and-true approach to identifying cells in solution. Flow cytometry studies are used to define hematological malignancies and identify and count immune cells. Fluorescent probes are used in flow cytometry to identify and describe cells or particles. Applications for flow cytometry include live/dead bacterial discrimination, membrane potential, immunophenotyping, transfection efficiency, apoptosis measurement, cell cycle analysis, fluorescent intensity, cell proliferation, cell sorting, and many more. Flow cytometry has a broad range of applications for research and clinical purposes, including cancer diagnosis, chromosome identification, and protein expression.
Flow cytometry is a technology that provides rapid multi-parametric analysis of single cells in solution. They utilize lasers as a light source and produce scattered and fluorescent light signals that get detected by detectors such as photodiodes or photomultiplier tubes attached to the cytometer.
